Workshop Overview

Mindfulness is everywhere, colouring books, ‘bookazines’, apps, mindfulness for this, mindfulness for that! Happily, some of these things offer valuable guidance on cultivating a mindfulness practice, sadly though others are at best promoting confusion and at worst simply using a buzzword to sell a product.

So, how to tell the difference and what actually is mindfulness?!

During this introductory workshop we will explore

  • common misconceptions about mindfulness
  • where mindfulness comes from and how it works
  • some of the theory behind mindfulness (including some basic neuroscience)
  • some practical mindfulness exercises and meditations
  • why taking an active approach to looking after our mind is as essential to our health and well-being as exercise and diet.

Who is this workshop for?

A diverse range of participants are attracted to mindfulness from students, parents of young children, corporate directors to healthcare professionals.

You may be interested in mindfulness as a means of

  • simply taking the time to prioritise wellbeing
  • managing physical and mental health concerns
  • navigating times of change
  • support in the challenges of parenting, or in some instances a wish to support your children’s experiences of mindfulness in school
  • continued personal and professional development.

This workshop is designed for those new to mindfulness who want to learn more. You may have questions that need answering before embarking on an 8-week course; you may have had a go at meditation and found your mind too busy or that you fell asleep; you may have been recommended by someone else to try out mindfulness – whatever the reason, this is your opportunity!

Whilst guidance will be offered for those who would like to go on to learn mindfulness there is no expectation to do so – curious/sceptics welcome.

Format of the Workshop

The Workshop will begin promptly at 6:30pm so we recommend arriving 10 minutes early. There will be a short break halfway through, with the workshop concluding at 8:30pm. The session will consist of a mixture of presentation, group discussion and gentle meditation exercises.

The Facilitator

The facilitator for this workshop is Sally Roberts – a former human resources manager and mindfulness sceptic! As a self-confessed workaholic it was only in response to ill health that Sally first found herself drawn to mindfulness in 2008. Having experienced how transformational mindfulness can be on a personal level it was the potential of mindfulness in the workplace which inspired Sally to train to teach mindfulness during 2012. In the years which have followed she has had the privilege of sharing many journeys into mindfulness (as a result of leading both public and workplace courses) and continues to be inspired by the transformational impact these can have at both a personal and professional level.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please note that no refunds will be offered for our 10 Year Anniversary events, given the discounted rates of £10 per person or less being offered.

If your attendance is being subsidised by your employer we ask that you let us know if you are no longer able to attend so that someone else can be offered the opportunity to do so.

Other Events

If you decide to cancel your place, you will receive:

  • A full refund (minus a £5 administration fee) provided we receive notice of your cancellation a least 14 days’ before the workshop date
  • A 50% refund if we receive 13 – 7 days’ notice
  • No refund if we receive less than 7 days’ notice

In the case that the workshop is cancelled by The Northern Centre for Mindfulness and Compassion, all workshop fees will be refunded in full.

I am considering training to teach mindfulness, will this course enable me to do this?

For those looking to teach mindfulness we would recommend having a look at the UK Network for Mindfulness Based Teacher Training Organisations which gives guidance on good practice and teacher training organisations within the UK. An 8-week MBSR, MBCT or 10-week MBLC course is generally considered a good starting point (including attendance on a day retreat) and often a pre-requisite to attending teaching training. Given several of our courses are adaptations of the traditional 8 week format, if you are looking to follow a particular training route it is worth checking any stipulated pre-requisites with your training provider.

My organisation are interested in/supportive of mindfulness – do you offer in-house training?

Yes we offer a full range of in-house mindfulness training, including stress reduction, resilience, change management, compassionate care, creativity and leadership development. Introductory workshops are an important first step for those wishing to offer mindfulness training. Please see our workplace webpage or get in touch for further information. We have also agreed employee discounts with a number of local organisations.
