Workshop Overview

The practice of mindfulness offers significant benefits to both individuals and organisations, yet understanding of mindfulness varies widely, from those who perceive mindfulness as a bit …(fill in the blank!)… through those who, having offered/attended introductory workshops, feel they have ‘done’ mindfulness to those who are making long term commitments to both the inner resourcing of themselves and their staff alongside a much needed exploration of workplace cultures.

Whilst we will briefly explore mindfulness from a health and wellbeing perspective, we will also move beyond this common discourse to consider its wider role in individual and organisational development.

During this introductory workshop we will explore

  • misconceptions around mindfulness
  • historical overview
  • research from both a health and wellbeing and a wider workplace perspective
  • practical mindfulness exercises and meditations
  • the range of mindfulness training being offered in organisations including in relation to change management, compassion, behaviour change and decision making.
  • what more mindful organisations might look like

Looking back over the last 10 years we will examine the trajectory of mindfulness in the workplace, reflecting on the Council’s journey of offering mindfulness training and allowing attendees the opportunity to consider their current and/or future organisational approach to mindfulness training.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is for anyone either considering or already offering mindfulness training within their organisation. All are welcome, no previous experience is required. Whilst guidance will be offered for those who would like to go on to offer or expand mindfulness training in their organisation there is no expectation to do so – curious/sceptics welcome.

Please note, those interested in beginning or deepening their own practice of mindfulness and compassion are encouraged to attend an introductory mindfulness workshop/engage with an 8 week mindfulness or compassion course. Next Steps

This workshop is specifically for those interested in offering mindfulness training in their organisation, it will offer delegates an opportunity to better understand the role of mindfulness in the workplace and reflect on their organisations current approach to mindfulness and any next steps they may wish to take.

Format of the Workshop

This workshop will begin promptly at 9:30am so we recommend arriving 15 minutes early. Please be aware that we will take a short break mid-morning. The workshop will conclude at 12:30pm. The session will consist of a mixture of presentation, group discussion and meditation exercises.

The Facilitator

As a Mindfulness Instructor at the Northern Centre for Mindfulness and Compassion Sally Roberts speaks regularly about mindfulness in a variety of settings. A former HR Manager (MCIPD) Sally has taught over 50 mindfulness courses and is passionate about mindfulness in the workplace. Examples of the Centre’s work are shared as contributory authors in Chapman-Clarke’s ‘Mindfulness in the Workplace: An Evidence-based Approach to Improving Wellbeing and Maximizing Performance’.

Please note that no refunds will be offered for our 10 Year Anniversary events, given the discounted rates of £10 per person or less being offered.

If your attendance is being subsidised by your employer we ask that you let us know if you are no longer able to attend so that someone else can be offered the opportunity to do so.

Other Events

If you decide to cancel your place, you will receive:

  • A full refund (minus a £5 administration fee) provided we receive notice of your cancellation a least 14 days’ before the workshop date
  • A 50% refund if we receive 13 – 7 days’ notice
  • No refund if we receive less than 7 days’ notice

In the case that the workshop is cancelled by The Northern Centre for Mindfulness and Compassion, all workshop fees will be refunded in full.

I am considering training to teach mindfulness, will this course enable me to do this?

For those looking to teach mindfulness we would recommend having a look at the UK Network for Mindfulness Based Teacher Training Organisations which gives guidance on good practice and teacher training organisations within the UK. An 8-week MBSR, MBCT or 10-week MBLC course is generally considered a good starting point and often a pre-requisite to attending teaching training. Given several of our courses are adaptations of the traditional 8 week format, if you are looking to follow a particular training route it is worth checking any stipulated pre-requisites with your training provider.

My organisation are interested in/supportive of mindfulness – do you offer in-house training?

Yes we offer a full range of in-house mindfulness training, including stress reduction, resilience, change management, compassionate care, creativity and leadership development. Introductory workshops are an important first step for those wishing to offer mindfulness training. Please see our workplace webpage or get in touch for further information. We have also agreed employee discounts with a number of local organisations.
